6-10 medium apples
3 Tablespoons of all-purpose flour
3 Tablespoons of granulated sugar (I like evaporated cane syrup)
1/2 cup of dark brown sugar
1 Tablespoon of Cinnamon
Optional 1 ounce of apple jack or apple whiskey
Preheat your oven to 350°F, and get out a 9" pie dish. Peel and core your apples and then cut them into chunks (1" or smaller) and place the cut apple pieces into your pie dish. Sprinkle the apples with the all-purpose flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and granulated sugar. Mix them together in the pie dish so there are no big clumps of flour.
In a seperate bowl combine the butter, dark brown sugar and whole wheat flour. Use a fork or knife to mix them until you get lots of little clumps. You do not want to mix so much that it forms a big ball. Take your bowl and spread the mixture evenly over the apples in the pie dish. I Pat mine down with my hand so none of the topping falls off as I move it.
Place your pie in the pre-heated oven and bake for 45-60 minutes. The top should darken and you will be able to see the juice from the apples thicken and look more like caramel.
My kids love it hot and topped with ice cream. I prefer it warm with a nice glass of sherry. We would love to hear about your favorite way to eat it!
WARNING eating it right out of the oven could cause burns in your mouth. Please give it at least 15 minutes to cool before you dig in.
